See What the Engineer Sees

07/10/2009 10:25 AM

Gents,

I have recently been provided access to our process network via broadband from home. As a software engineer I have little need to be on the plant throwing spanners at anything.

However, it would be helpful if I was able to see exactly how a fault is occurring as reports tend to be incorrect at first hearing.

Is anyone aware of a wireless camera/intercom system that could be put on the engineer on shift so that I could see what he was seeing and speak to him to tell him where to look next?

I think the police in the uk tried out something like this but not sure

Thanks

Al

Hi BA, FIRST, there are more than GENTS here ... although glad to be one, I can say, "THANK GOODNESS", there are some fine ladies here as well :-) Regarding your question, doesn't 3G allow this using most modern mobile phones? I think so. Just a call from one to another so equipped will allow both parties to send and receive video. Kind regards ....

If you install an I/P based KVM switch on the plant network, & you have a dual video card, then you can be "live at 5" with what the other person is seeing & doing.

There are so many ways to pass live video over the internet or via dial up phones and many companies are making such units....the cheaper ones may lack a bit on quality so be careful that you buy something with a good sharp focus.

Such cameras are usually supplied with a CD with an installation package......assuming that the person onsite has a laptop available (some laptops have a built in video camera), and some way of connecting with the internet at the same time.

Or if no laptop onsite, Google "Video phone" and look at those, all they need is a phone line.....you need to have one too of course......!
