API 5L Pipe - Grade A vs. Grade B

07/13/2009 6:40 AM

Dear forum

Does API 5L Gr. B and A 53 Gr b any difference?

I was seen that mechanical and chemical properties between both of pipe are equal

Yield strength=60000PSI; %C=0.3

My question is, May i use A 53 for kerosene pipeline?

Yes you can use ASTM A53 Grade B for Kerosene pipeline where there is no higher temperatures.

One diference between both ( Gr A and Gr B) is the Hydrotest pressure during the pipe fabrication progress. See notes for Calcs. of Hydro Pressure and the % of YS required for each one (API 5L).

Kerosene, Hummm, no problem. Watch out with temperature and isolation.

API 5L Grade A 48KSI min UTS 30KSI min yeild .22% Carbon, .9% Mn.

API 5L Grade B 60KSI min UTS 35KSI min yeild .27% Carbon, 1.15% Mn

The chemistry and mech. properties are NOT equal. Grade B can be used in place of Grade A except where there might be an issue of H2S embrittlement.

API had a reason for making two different standards.

I 'm sorry for missing title.

The correct title is, API 5L Gr. B vs A 53 Gr. B

I'm sorry I missed that the first go-round. the ASTM standard is the equivalent of the API standard. The API standard came first. ASTM came along later and duplicated it as an ASTM standard.
