Fastener distribution

07/14/2009 10:17 AM

I work with Defense contracts. Is it prevalent in the industry that a manufacturers part number alone will not direct a source of supply when ordered through a distributor? All feedback is appreciated on the topic. Clearly I have heard some interesting views.

Yes. The Mfg. P/N doesn't satisfy the govt. specification requirements. In reality the parts are the same, but with the qualification to govt. specs, the price goes up without any elevation of reliability.

MIL Specs, FED specs FED STDS.

There's a MIL-SPEC for chocklet chip cookies, and everything else, too.
