Glycerol to more valuable glycol

07/14/2009 5:52 PM

Glycerol may be converted in more valuable glycol. Anyone knows prices of crude and refined glycerol and if crude a process to refine it.

propylene glycol is normally made from propylene oxide gas found in petro stream. production from glycerol to propylene glycol may be possible but economics would have to looked into. whether its for research/academic or bussiness? rgds shivanand shenoy

Basically for business. I saw the process http://www.renewablealternatives.com/pgpaper.pdf. Remains to know if it is economically viable. Regards Gerd Smit.

That was extremely rude.

Hi gerdsmit,

I found this paper on hydrolysis of glycerine. The products are chiefly propylene glycol, ethylene glycol and 1,3-propanediol which will need to be separated.

http://www.renewablealternatives.com/pgpaper.pdf

I found this with a Google search. Just type "propylene glycol from glycerol" and press enter; there were more relevant hits.

Mike
