In a chimney it regulates the flow of hot gases upward. In an air conditioning system it regulates the flow of air through ductways.

It usually consists of a piece of sheet metal shaped to conform to the inside of the ductway or chimney and is adjusted to block, more or less, the air or gas flow.

Dashpot dampers slow down the movement of a rod through use of a close-fitting piston and cylinder. The fluid friction between the two as the cylinder exhausts is used to slow the movement.

Damper a noun can be an applied name to many devices. Look up the definition of the word.
