Welding Engineering Forum Thread?

07/16/2009 8:01 AM

I searched welding engineering from the search bar and came up with many topics that were scattered from civil to electrical to mechanical and all dealt with welding. It seems as though a Welding Engineering Forum thread is needed. This would help to group all the welding related discussions together. Does anyone else have any input on this?

Your very first post and you want to change things? You did find them after all, though they may not have been as conviently located as you would have liked.

Stick around for a while, see how things work. Maybe you'll decide the present system is OK.

Anyway, welcome to the group. Great bunch of people.

Thanks for the welcome.

Yes I do propose a "big change" with my first post. You make it seem like everything is perfectly fine without need for additions or suggestions. I was only suggesting that a new forum could be added to facilitate answering questions and sharing information related to welding. Yes I was able to find topics and discussions. Yes it would make it more convenient. But finding current discussions and up to date topics is another issue. I was hoping that a moderator with some power would see the post and evaluate its merit.

If we never expanded or revised anything then progress would never be made. As engineers, life is all about revisions and changes. I would expect that a forum board for engineers would be the most open to changes and additions. My area of focus within the large realm of engineering is welding, and I would like to see an area to discuss what I am interested in and to help those who have questions if I can.

General topics for the proposed Welding Engineering Forum Thread would include:

welding metallurgy, welding processes including both fusion and solid state, cracking issues, material compatibility, weld symbols, weld tests, weld certifications, welding codes and standards, welding plastics, the electronics of the power supply, AC vs DCEP vs DCEN, etc.

Thanks,

Travis

Thanks for setting me straight. I didn't realize how misguided the forum was.

Get a life - why on earth can a new member not propose a new category? Is that a privilege only granted to "the few".

Maybe you could propose a new rule for CR4.

Something like; It is a requirement of this site that you must have made at least 1000 posts before you can make any suggestions for improvement.

I like the idea. Welding is a cross-over subject and is also a vast subject. This idea certainly deserves consideration.

I fully support your proposal too. Somebody should take an initiative action now.

You might try this site. While there are often some fairly provincial posts, there are also some very technical ones. WeldingWeb.com

Thanks for the link. I will check that out.

It seems like there is some support for the proposal of a Welding Engineering Forum Thread. Is there a Moderator that would like to chime in? Does anyone know who I could contact regarding this idea?

Hello 85cj7boy,

And welcome. Take your time and have a good look at all the sections.

The people are friendly and helpful to like minded members. And there is some very knowledgeable members you can ask help of.

The CR4 site as it is known is split into the basic Engineering Disciplines, all engineering facilities are available from any one of these areas.

What you did not do was tell me/us what welding you were interested in? What do you want to weld and or make?

I would advise you to 'base' your posts around Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and General Engineering. Which ever one you are on, we view each and if anyone sees something interesting he will post to say so. Or the admin of CR4 will publish your thread, which all will see and go looking for.

You do not need a particular "welding" section.

What next, a bolt tightening section, a molding section, a how section on making screws? Where does it stop?............Do you see what I mean?

Having the basic Engineering sections as it is now means you can ask any questions and all sections will know, so if you want to know about welding, ask?

Good luck.

I am not just interested in a specific question regarding welding. I do realize that this method of posting a welding question in the closest related area of engineering is the way this forum has worked.

I see sections for Civil, Electrical, Biomedical, Mechancial, areas of Computer Engineering etc.

Welding Engineering is a discipline that is studied and that some engineers specialize in. I am in this field and the topic areas listed above in my previous post are some of the specific topics that I study and wish to discuss in a forum created for my field of study.

The biggest problem with Welding Engineering is the lack of familiarity and knowledge about my field.

I find it disheartening that people would not want to recognize this area of engineering and accept that it is valid enough to create a discussion forum for it.

Welding holds the World together. In my search of comments regarding welding on this site I have seen people ask if there is such a thing as a welding engineer. This goes to prove that it is an area of engineering that needs to be displayed.

If anyone wants further information on Welding Engineering check out the following link.

Hello 85c,

Hope you do not mind me shortening your name? I cannot see very well and cannot make out some of the letters and figure all the time.

I agree with what you say on 'welding'. Two members of my Family who I am unfortunately not in touch with very often anymore, are welders.

They are both 'Rod' welders, and can name the rod used in any welding circumstance. One can actually weld two thickness' of kitchen foil! Not necessarily a very useful thing to learn, but it shows his versatility.

I think you should go ahead and start your own Welding Blog.

Before buying any welding tools, have a look at the profile virtual shops to check for product features and compare prices. You'll be surprised to see what a rich offer of products you can find online, at prices that range from low and moderate to incredibly high. Besides the catalogs, many companies also offer consultancy to interested clients; there are presentations of the welding tools, and for each of them you may ask for further details. In case price is not a problem, and you're only after quality, it is good to choose the companies with a longer experience in the welding tools business.
