Wind Damage and Hurricane-Proof Housing

07/16/2009 1:40 PM

if one was to study the subject of wind damage as in hurricane proof house building, what science in the civil subject would this be?

I'm not aware of an actual official term dedicated to the study of wind caused damage on civil structures. As far as I know it would still simply fall under the "Civil Engineering" umbrella, although there is a:

"American Association for Wind Engineering" (among many many others)

That said,

I was able to pull up some good information on the subject that you may be able to pull some related information from.

Maybe ask the folks over at the International Hurricane Research Center at FIU

No such thing as a Hurricane Proof anything as far as I know. A wind tunnel test and CAT 4-5 blowing against your structure for 4-6 hours are 2 very different things. If there is one , please let me know.

hmmmmmmmmmm? Ok, maybe a Quanset hut type structure....... but get some water underneath it and away it goes too.

After Hurricane Andrew blew away most of South Fla. The building codes went thru a huge remake. Too numerous to list here. But found easily under "Miami-Dade codes...etc.) We now have Hurricane proof structures for shelters, and of course my neighbors at NASA protect their spaceships with newer building techniques...I just leave town...LOL...

Calculating potential wind damage by hurricane would fall under the subject of "wind load" and other impact load calculations in structural engineering. Check out this search for example.

For hurricane proof housing you'll want to look at storm surge impact loading as well.

There are specific considerations for windows, doors, different materials, etc etc.

Check out this CR4 thread about wind pressure on doors.

Building loads and load paths. Structural engineering. Use the IBC (International Building Code) to find wind loads.

May I also include with the other fine answers, our brothers in the trade that also use the same needs - Architect journals and the Sweets catalogs are priceless. U.S. Gypsum has alway been very helpful with answers to these type of ideas and questions.

A wind tunnel test and a real cat 5 cyclone are very different things. See below
