Power Cable and Control Cable

07/16/2009 11:58 PM

I have placed a control cable in a conduct that contains a 415V power cable, I found that electrical interference due to the power cable (I guess) has affect the performance of the control cable, it create noice in the contral cable...

Is there any solution to reduce or minimize the electrical noise?

Thank you..

Separation, shielding, ensuring control cable signal & return are twisted and/or shielded. All these are standard techniques.

please give More details about your machine, about the power cable(is it from a VFD) and also the control cable supply voltage.

You can use copper shielded cables for reducing noise and shielding must be Earthed

you should furnish control and electrical cable in seperate conduits. according to NEC,these cables has to be seperate.

The code does not allowed control and power cable of different systems to be mixed in the same conduit. Also, if cable of the same system is mixed in the same conduit, their voltage rating must be the same.

Close examination of install directions should reveal their recommendation to run a separate conduit for control cables due to eddy currents present around any electrical cable. These currents will produce unwanted inductive current in the control cable. It may cause the control to fail or act erratic.

When you will lay the Control & Power cable... use different tray for cables..keep a minimum 10mm distance between trays. Use Collective and individual screening control cable...

Firstly, I don't know what the regulations are where you live with regard to laying signal and power cables together, but do follow that as a first.

I personally do not see a problem with putting them together provided that they are well insulated from each other AND all the signals are each sent as differential twisted pairs (two wires per signal) over the cable. There is a need for some extra electronics at each end.

You may find that something like the DS96176, RS-485/RS-422 Differential Bus Transceiver, which you will find here, may supply a quick and effective method of implementing such electronics....

...but only if regulations allow of course......

Using differential drivers is always a good way of reducing the effects of interference on signals.....here is a reasonable explanation of how they work, I hope it helps you further.

If you cant run seprate conduits for the power and control cables, then you should maintain atleast 10cm distance inbetween them.
