Help in wind turbine

07/18/2009 5:36 AM

Hi frnds i m doing project on the wind turbine to power my house. I have formulas for designing each part except the blades.I want to charge 6v battery frm it.I m having 9v dc Generator.Wind speed is 8 to 10mph.I will use two batteries for input to my 12 invertor. So that 1>what is the formula fo design blades.

You may find vertical axis system simpler to build. These will not require the ability to head into the wind. They can give power in lower wind speeds, but have more drag and are less efficient than a custom airfoil horizontal axis wind gen.

Look up Savonius wind generator and Darius wind generator.

Here are some videos:

More for inspiration but also show proof of concept.

I filmed some of these (commercial install) last trip to Chicago, I'll post after I load the pix.

Why try to reinvent the wheel? Blades are a critical part of a wind generator. The tips can travel at high speeds. Failure can result in severe damage. With the modern technologies used to produce blades, it would be hard to build a blade that is as efficient. There is a lot of info on this site. They do sell high performance blades.

Here is a site that shows how to hand carve wooden blades. Efficiency will be down, but the cost will also be less.

The way I read your setup, you would need one wind generator per battery. By using more batteries, say 24 or 48V, and one wind charger, wire size could be reduced and a more efficient inverter can be used.

I have an old Trane Tracer 100 for sale! You could use this to control your system using a frequency drive. This was used for an old Joy Fan System that we just locked down @ 100% now controled by an Alerton System!.
