Omni Directional TV Antenna

07/20/2009 11:05 AM

When I bought my present house three years ago, there was an omnidirectional tv antenna mounted on a mast beside the house. The wires had been cut to it. I have satellite service so I haven't used the antenna, but I am considering using it. I took it down to inspect it. It is round, about 20 inches in diameter or slightly more. All the labels have worn away. It has a short piece of coax that has been cut off. It also has a short piece of what looks like telephone wire. It is three wires, one black, one white, and one yellow. Does anyone know anything about these and can you tell me what the other wires are for.

The antenna may have a built in amplifier, perhaps the extra wires are to power that?

Not that you can't have an omnidirectional TV antenna, but from what you describe, it doesn't sound like that one was one.

Are you sure the antenna was for TV and not just for FM radio? I guess an FM radio antenna might work ok around channels 6 or 7, or at least what 6 and 7 were.

I agree that the second wire could of been an amplifier, but that is just a guess, most amps today use the coax for power also.

I think that is a Radio Shack TV rotor amplified antenna. It runs from DC to ground to power the amplifier with 12 volts or so and it has a reversible motor drive to turn a small yagi inside the dome.

Sounds like a tv antenna used on many RV's (caravans for those across the pond). Also available for home use.

Cheers!
