Nylock Nuts

07/23/2009 2:02 AM

How often may a Nyloc Nut be used, and where can I find a written specification specifying this?

Once!

If desperate hit the top with a hammer and use again - at your own risk.

A GA! If only you were registered...

To the OP, you have to give more information. There are single-use lock nuts and there are reuseable lock nuts. Have you checked with the manufacturer for their recommendation? There are also industry-specific standards. Have you checked that? There are also safety standards. Do you have an internal standard with regard to locking fasteners? This is not a "one size fits all" question.

Once and only once PERIOD. Example at this moment I'm in the middle of an extensive gear train overhaul on an EMD (medium speed 3000 kw engine) due to the fact that someone rebuilt a water pump and re-used the 2.00 usd lock nut that secures the pumps drive gear. 25,000 usd in parts and 500,000 in down time was the result!

Why that ?

Due to that magnanimous fellow you got the money 25,000 usd in parts and 500,000 in down time, labour and other costs and then a job in this recession times.

Say god bless the person, let there be more like him and more resourceful ones. At the moment unable to find some examples,

may be persons who will just align the bearing broken cage or weld the broken gear tooth or something like that (people do it you know)

Theres no shortage of these guys in the oil field. Theres enough in fact that you all could try and recruit some into your fields of work. I really wouldn't mind at all to be rid of a few of them.
