Lead and Lead-Free Materials for Choke Products

07/23/2009 4:22 AM

Hi,

We're maunfacturing choke products.

In that we solder the pin with lead free material(SAC 305- Tin, Silver,Copper) . Now we wish to use leaded(Tin,Lead) solder material to join our product with PCB.

Can we know, what are the effects when the lead free soldered pin reacts with leaded solder material?

a) How about Solderability ?

b) How about the contact?

c) How about the bonding strength b/w pin & PCB in a period of time?

Note:

i)Soldering temp profile of leadfree solder material - 260±5°c

ii)Soldering temp profile of leaded solder material - 240±5°c

Can anybody assists me in this regard ....

Hari

Leaded solder is old technology and is well developed for FR4 type board. If you take care below thing

1. Parts are oxide free

2. Parts are free of greas and dirt

3. Control the mositure

4. Use correct flux

5. Check the solder for tin crystals

There is no way you can go wrong.

Clean, clean and have correct flux to assure no oxide comes in soldring from solder and from the part. rest is pure metallurgy and will come out always good.

I believe that the biggest problem that you'll face is selling a product that contains lead. Many countries restrict import of products containing lead. Perhaps you should look into this before you alter your manufacturing process.
