Automobile Parts and Mechanism Database

07/23/2009 4:25 AM

Dear readers,

I've searched (in vain) quite a lot for an online compendium of information regarding the basic working and components of all vehicles. Can any of you please help me on this search? The website ought to have detailed explanations with diagrams on all the different systems inside any kind of automobile or motorcycle. Eg- We shoukd be easily able to find loads of info on how drum brakes work, how a carburettor functions, what is engine tuning, how to repair a shock absorber, why is a differential necessary etc.

Thanks in anticipation. Hope such a link to automotive fundamentals exists!

Whats wrong with a book?

Modern Automotive Technology (duffy)

http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Automotive-Technology-James-Duffy/dp/1590701860

Books are still available, if it has to be "electronic," you can always put it on your kindle.

I have found a lot of really good information in "books."

And because of the cost of production editing etc., the information in books tends to be higher quality than most online info.

end of old guy book rant

GA!

Not only that, but, most people wouldn't mind going to more than one web site on such A TOTALLY DIVERSE topic.

Computers have made us incredibly lazy and selfish!

DeltaT, look up the individual topics yourself and don't be so lazy and selfish!

I would have said to go and enroll in a MotorMech course at your local school that caters for the questions this person has.

Shocker Servicing is *Dangerous* if you don't have the correct tools, even if you know what your doing (Contents under pressure, do not punchure or incinerate) and there are many different configurations for shockers, Internal & external valving, variable valving rates, adjustable valving, internal/external bypass, remote cannister, rechargeable/sealed, also dapening/rebound rates, and many different sizes, from small as used on remote controlled buggies, up to real monsters on building stabilizers, or monsters on vehicles like the Foxx-Shox 3.0 External bypass, or the Bilstein Stealth.

If you really want to sound old just inform the newer generation that the original "hand held calculators" we used were made from bamboo. And I do not refer to the abacus. Those of us that started prior to the early 70s remember something hanging from our belts that was not an MP3 or celphone. I was never that good with them but the good old slide rule really did rule for many years and I know some engineers that could put a kid and his pocket PC to shame for speed with one. And though they were made of plastic or wood the best were made of a special bamboo and cost miore than a pocket PC does now.

I also rode a dinosoar to school everyday in the snow and it was uphill both ways.

End of another "old timer" story.

Hello DT,

I have looked at a spares base for Motorcycles. But not for Cars, trucks, etc. I will give you the motorcycle spares data site asap. Got to find it yet and am looking for the motor car data base.

I am sorry to him as I cannot recall his name, but the post under mine had a couple of sites listed for cars?

Hello DT,

http://www.bikebandit.com/

This is a site which has spares details and schematics for most Motorbikes.

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/30580#newcomments

This is a CR4 site post site, which has detail about what they show. As a for instance look down the posts and you will come to a Honda rear suspension and you can see it is in pretty good detail.

The post under mine lists some Vehicle sites let me know if they are what you want please.

Keep in touch.

Re: Automobile Parts and Mechanism Database

Hi DT,

This is listed as a data base but have not checked to see the different makes available.

http://search.vivastreet.co.uk/vehicles?lb=new&search=1&start_field=1&cat_1=138&keywords=form+rear+suspention&searchGeoId=0&searchGeo_text=Postcode%2C+city%2C+neighbourhood&submit=Search&end_field=

=

This is listed as a 'car data base' and lists pretty much all cars. My thinking is if you can look up the car spec, you will know what to search for?

=

Try this search page I found, it seems pretty good. http://www.wisebuyers.co.uk/motoring/car-specifications/

=

http://uk.ask.com/web?q=Car+Specifications&qsrc=6&o=41439047&l=dis&siteid=

=

Try these few site and you will see the last one lists all kinds of 'data sites'.

Get back to me and let me know how you get on.

Re: Automobile Parts and Mechanism Database

07/24/2009 5:37 AM

That was an amazing response, guys. Thanks a million. :)

@Milo- I agree. I try to use books as much as possible (and much more than my classmates) because they help us understand the subject more conceptually. I'm in my sophomore year and we have a course called 'Automotive Mechanics' in our final year for which the book you've recommended is indeed the prescribed textbook. The area of automotive mechanisms and components was so diverse that this was exactly the reason why I thought there would be an online database on it. Since I plan to work on a project related to this field before my final year, I'm trying to understand the fundamental concepts right now.

@Lynlynch- Good one. I deserved it. I'm not really lazy, though; no offense meant and taken. :)

@Babybear- Nice links... I appreciate this help very much.

Well then, maybe you can build your own web site that puts all the public information you are searching for in a single place. BB's given you the start.

Good luck, and welcome.

Hello lynlynch,

Thanks for the mention...............

But you could have said I was good looking and a really handsome chap as well? LOL ;=)

Cheers my friend. The problem is when you search for "data" you get so many 'so called' data bases which in fact deal only with a single item. Like electric cables or something?

Take care.

You might want to try All Data http://www.alldata.com/

I use this site on an almost daily basis. So far they have had information on every vehicle I have worked on.

You are correct AllData is a subscriber site but, they have the complete service manuals that are used by the dealers. They also have complete wiring schematics and diagonstic tips as well as step by step troubleshooting. Its well worth the money.

I would love to have the extra cash to be a member with them. But alas although I work on cars regularly I have chosen to use the old analogue shop manuals like Haynes and Chilton.

Someday maybe.

I have to admit I have a neighbor who is an auto shop teacher at a local high school. He gets me anything I need for the cars/trucks I work on. For some strange reason I have become the neighborhood/family mechanic. May have something to do with the fact I was an ASE tech several years back. Any way AllData is not to expensive if you look for information for a single car, less than $20 if I remember.

Hi yourself. It's gonna be 112 F here today. Lots of sandstorms makes keeping the old swimmin' hole clean a big pain. We get lots of wind here over July/August and Sept. almost daily.

Go to Chilton's homepage, they offer several software and print manuals, they have also a rather complete package that covers all makes from the last decade to the date. It'll cost you a few hundred bucks but it is exactly what you're looking for.

An excellent book on automotive theory in general, was one I ran across while in the US Army, and to my surprise I just found it online, TM 9-8000, the link is below. It has exactly what you are looking for.

Shooter, Kiran001- Kudos. Thanks guys...these are excellent links, quite similar to what I was looking for.

Babybear- Yeah, I'm new here. I hope to become an active contributor and answer technical queries here after I've actually graduated into a mechanical engineer. Until then, I plan to help as much as I can with the knowledge I already possess. And yes, there are extremely intelligent and helpful people around here. :) P.S.- You're quite handsome too.

Hello DT,

oh darn, you noticed! LOL ;=)

=

Thanks for the reply post and yes, you can answer anything you have an 'opinion' on! Often 'outsiders' or 'new comers' can put a different 'slant' of a post rather than a strictly 'Engineering-ly' one? Sorry for the last word and poor English using it but it is the case.

All anyone here asks is that you are well 'mannered' and reasonable. Well you have ticked both those 'boxes', so welcome and your advice will be very useful I am sure. On some questions, as I am sure you may have noticed, 'common sense' can often bring an answer where perhaps the highly educated general run of the members here, will not 'see' that answer, as they are thinking in a different more esoteric realm? (Them sounds like big words) but, it can sometimes be the case. And the subject of 'Engineering' is so vast there is always room for new ideas!

Good luck with your Uni' and good luck here my friend!

On the topic of books, Automotive Handbook by Bosch is a great resource for general explanations. They also have more specialised books such as Electronics Handbook.
