Sourcing a Gearbox

07/24/2009 3:21 PM

Would you please help me to source 20MW Power Gearbox

Is it possible to operate gearboxes in series ( Tandem) to have more power if single unit does not have 20MW power

It's required for Nacelle testing feasility to test complete nacelle.

Please help me in this regard.

This is easy to understand if you just become familiar with the relationships between torque, work and power. Please look over some basic materials like wikipedia or an entry level text book.

If you have a 20 MW power motor coupled to a gearbox, the gearbox could still put out 20 MW of power (assuming no losses). But the gearbox power out would be delivered at a different torque (higher if the gearbox is used as a reducer) and RPM (lower if the gearbox is used as a reducer) than the motor provided.

If you add another gearbox to the output of the first gearbox, the second gearbox could still put out 20 MW of power (assuming no losses). But the gearbox power out would be delivered at a still different torque and RPM.

I am reading between the lines a bit and by tandem I think parallel not series.

Are you saying that by using two gear boxes you get a total of 20 MW? So each would Carry 10MW each?

Nacelle would indicate wind power usage possibly?

That is a common set up in industrial applications were two motors and gear boxes of lesser capacity do the work of one of larger capacity. This also works with driving two generators going the other direction with the power. But the generators if AC type would require some basic phasing and synchronization of their outputs in order to work as one larger generator. But yes it can be done.

Dear Sir,

If you give me the details regarding the output rpm required and direct load to be carried by the gear box and the application details, i can provide you the gearbox, suitable for your application.

With Regards !

Hi , I am, not a member however I like the question. so here is my answer

Source only manuf. that meet rules and regulations, provide service, and are well known, ask for references that are similar or equal to your application.Your application is vital input for the right design.

Power, intermittent? load changes? constant? stand by?

Speed in/output, variable? constant? torque variabel? torque constant?

Environment land? marine? offshore?

Prime mover /driven equipment needs to be inline? Offset horizontal? Offset vertical?

Clutch required?, Integrated in gearbox? external? Hydr operated/air operated/electr operated?

Requirements for control/monitoring, pressure, temperatures oil/bearing/gradient monitoring, vibration?

Design gearbox, lightweight, welded casing, cast casing, dry sump/wety sump?

Gearbox driven oil pump? electric standby?

Simplex/duplex filters? Instrumentation, dP indication, alarm?

Available space?

Flex coupling prim/outgoing shaft design

Diesel engine involved? than make incorporate gearbox in the torsional vibration analysis.

Best regards

Jaap

Hello sivam',

how are you?

================================================= (What you wrote)

Would you please help me to source 20MW Power Gearbox.

Is it possible to operate gearboxes in series ( Tandem) to have more power if single unit does not have 20MW power.

It's required for Nacelle testing feasility to test complete nacelle.

================================================= =

With the reference to Gearboxes, the speed at the 'final' gearbox has to be given some thought. I can perhaps understand the use of smaller, lighter, gearboxes, which allow for, maybe two or three in a row?

This can keep the total drive speed down in the first couple of boxes, which will last longer because of this. The 'final' gearbox could be the one which could perhaps be a more simple affair with say, one or two ratios? And it

could be the one to be replaced and maintained at a more regular interval? Does that make sense to you?

=

With regard to the nacelle testing............

It depends on the exact use you intend for the 'Nacelled' (if that is the correct term) Motor and gearbox/es? If they are to be in an aircraft then for sure they should be tested. If, on the other hand you are asking maybe of a Wind Mill, I would have thought that you could use an already manufactured Nacelle?

You could build a good strong floor or base to carry everything and, of course to allow access to the gearboxes and Motor for maintenance. You would essentially building a small room but up high.

=

I will not say more until I see what you have in mind, but it does sound interesting.

=

All of what I say is guessing as I do not know the final use of the motors and gearboxs, OK?
