If you are asking these questions because you are studying Marine Engineering then I suggest the following reference books:

Marine Auxiliary Machinery - HD McGeorge (This will answer your questions)

Pounders - Marine Diesel Engines

Lamb's - Questions and answers.

You can get older versions second hand quite cheaply.
