Typical Temperature of Crude Oil

07/25/2009 4:14 PM

I expect that in general the deeper one drills to recover crude oil, the warmer the oil extracted would be. I am interested in learning what typical temperature range would be encountered for crude oil exiting the borehole from deep wells and if information can be provided for variation of the temperature range with depth. What types of casing and grade of piping (ie:alloys) are needed down-hole to allow pumping up the crude oil?

Many Thanks.

"For off-shore applications, for example, the sensorsare preferably capable of measuring to an accuracy of 0.01° C. relative, and 0.1° C. absolute, over the range of from 0° C. to 150° C. For on-shore applications, again by way of example, the sensors are preferably capableof measuring to the aforementioned accuracy over the range of from 20° C. to 150° C."

Is this offshore or onshore?

Is there much gas pressure?

Keep in mind if sub sea choke valves are used, formation gas may be chilling the product at the sea floor.... and the water temp is quite low too.....

In the Northern Alaskan fields that feed the Trans-Alaskan pipeline, it is around 145 degrees F.

Easy way to convert C to F and back again, from a mag article in the 70s.

To either C or F, add 40

For going C to F mult. by 9/5; otherwise by 5/9

subtract 40

145F + 40 = 185 5/9 of 185 = 103 103-40 = 63C

From memory, the natural gas coming from the Moomba field (Australia) was around 200-220F.
