Google Earth for Linux

07/25/2009 4:19 PM

I am new to using Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) and want to install Google Earth. Unfortunately, I have found no texts on how to install downloads of this sort. The Google Earth file downloads as a .bin (I assume binary) file, but after downloading, how do I get the file to open and start running?

I did this a while back- only, the newer version of Google Earth would not work. The instructions for installing were on the site. If I remember rightly, one must first change the permissions on the file to allow you, the user, to execute it, or use superuser priviledges. In a terminal window, migrate to the folder where the file exists, and type the file name to execute. This installs the program.

These instructions are pretty crude. Better look at the instruction page on Google Earth for a better description...

Usually you would change permissions on the BIN file, open up a terminal as SU and type in the instructions to uncompile and install. Ubuntu are miles ahead regards providing comprehensive help...I would ask/search there.

You might also try using Synaptics to install Google Earth.

Have a look at the latest on Ubuntu Forum ... LINK

you will get better and clearer answers from the Ubuntu community.

being a Ubuntu 9.04 noob myself, I'm only starting to wade in Linux waters, and was able to install GoogleEarth quite effortlessly (Linux is actually more user-friendly than Windows once you begin to understand how the OS works).

try these instructions on how to install the app.

Ubuntu flavour is by far the best Linux OS, I am still in awe of the freedom, independance, miriad of choices and stability from a free OS

...bummer I am typing this from a winblowz laptop, my PC hard drive running Linux pooped itself
