07/26/2009 10:50 AM

hi all

my name is nebiyou from ethiopia .i am trying to synchronize two 500kva generators with ig-cu or ig-nt (comapp) synchronizers.i have recently tried to synchronize two 500kva cummins generators with dkg 705 (datakom product)and it was succesesfull but i didnt test it with load.the comapp synchronizers are a little bit complicated and since i didnt test the cummins genset with load i am not 100%sure.I want to be sure of everything before i start the job.you know what could happen if i miss something

please if u have something which u can share with me or if u can suggest me any useful website i will be glad

with kind regards

If you do not totally understand synchronisation do not attempt it. let an expert. Is it worth your life to make a mistake ? Contact ComAp directly and they will send a serviceman. They are very customer oriented. Google "ComAp". Also, a Caterpillar or Cummins dealer in you area can do it.

The Comap agent for Africa is in South Africa. Contact IPU in the UK for their contact details: http://www.ipu.co.uk/ipugroup_home.asp?id=160440

What ever possessed you to attempt this task with your obvious limited understanding of the task???

Solicit help from trained personnel in your area before you damage a generator or worse.

Watch and ask questions as they are synchronizing the generators. This will not qualify you to be doing it on your own, but its a step in the right direction.

thank you all

thankyou for your concerns but you didnt get me well i have been working with generators for a long time (especially in assembling and installation of automatic transfer switch for big generators ) and i have read a lot about how to synchronize and how they share the load ,what to adjust and as i have told i have synchronized two 500 kva generators with dkg 705 datakom synchronizer with EFC controled engines. i didnt just come with idea of synchronization just now i have been studing about how to synchronize gensets for more than six months. i just want to know more before i go directly to the job.if u have synchronized genset with the compac product or other synchronizer and if u can tell me what things i should give more concern ,about problems that could happen and anything that you think it is important

with kind regards

I think we are all worried about your safety, which should make you feel good that people you do not know want to protect you from harm... of course, we know that makes you feel good. Now, back to the technical details.

I am a simple person. If ComAp installation manual was complete and easy to understand, an experienced generator technician would understand it perfectly. So, the following things can be true:

1) The ComAp book is not written well

2) You don't have a ComAp book

3) Your comprehension is low for the book (language not translated to your mother tongue, vocabulary, reading comprehension in that language, etc.)

4) You do not have enough experience

Be very careful for item 3 and 4 as translations to English from Czech can be quite interesting and especially if English is your 2nd or 3rd language.

Any experienced technician can parallel and load-share any two generators with a simple analog volt meter and some simple tools to adjust governor droop (on a non electronic governor), and a watch with a second hand, manually, without any controllers, as we did in the beginning of my career in 1974. If you have this level of knowledge, and have done it (not only studied it), then you have the basic skills to understand and answer your own question.

We are ONLY worried about your safety, not our egos and knowledge on the subject.

have an expert do this: What should you worry about for ComAp controller? Nothing special as they make a quite good controller. Make sure all connections are perfect, triple check them, check all current transformers (CTs) are the correct ratio and phased correctly and directionalised correctly, check phase rotation of generator leads, make sure no secondary CT leads are open or the CT may explode when you place current through them, check ComAp's procedure and initial settings for "Before you start the units", use proper personal protection equipment (PPE) since arc flash is very possible and can blow the doors off of the switchgear, make sure all potential transformers are feeding the correct voltage to the controller, be sure any frequency settings are made in the controller (50 Hz or 60 Hz bus), be sure any ammeter phase selector switches short out the secondaries of CT's not routed to the ammeter for that particular switch position....

If you are fluent with English, and you do not fully understand any of these terms, do not attempt anything.

Thank you for your fast response

The generators that I am planning to synchronize are already fitted with comapp auto synchronizer controllers .the manufacturer sent us the generators with all synchronizer accessories fitted on the generator based on our request. that is why I am concerned about comapp product if it were not for these reason I would have prefer datakom products especially dkg 705) because I know the controller very well and I know the contact person and I can synchronize the gensets easily using with dkg 705.

And to answer your questions

I do have the full comapp manual (the installation guide manual, the application guide manual and the configuration manual)

I have already read all of it once and I understand the concept very well and I will read it in detail

I know how it is done using the dark lamp method Manually

AND I UNDERSTAND VERY VERY WELL ALL OF THE THINGS YOU HAVE MENTIONED and I know how the kvar and load is shared including its principle and operation.

Please suggest me any kind of websites or your suggestions based on your practical experience

With best regards

I have no web sites to recommend. Just Google various phrases regarding 'generator synchronisation' and see if some interesting things come up. Try Google for all different words for "generator, paralleling, synchronising, load sharing," and such words.

Good luck
