KVM Switch and USB Connection

07/26/2009 11:09 AM

Here is my dilemma - I have two computers hooked up to a 4 port KVM switch, but I only have one USB net connection.

Can I use a simple 4 connection USB hub and use one IP connection to service both computers?

If not, what do I have to do?

It gets to be a pain having to disconnect from one to connect to the other when I need to do so as both computers only have USB connections in the rear of the unit and being under the table in a "secure" fan-cooled box, it is awkward to say the least.

You need to get yourself a router. Linksys is a pretty popular brand but there are many others. All do the same thing, mostly brand differences with some functional differences. Linksys is pretty easy to work with and lots of forums out there if you get lost. The USB hub will not work for this to share the net. Each computer needs it's own IP address, hence the router. The router will take your main IP (internet service) and then issue each computer it's own IP and then divy up the traffic accordingly. Also you will need to make sure that each computer has a NIC (Network Interface Card) If you need them you can find them cheap online or if in a hurry I've seen them for as low as $30 USD at the store. The only other thing you'd need is ethernet cables to go from each pc to the router and one to go from the router to your modem (cable, DSL, Fiber desn't matter what service you have for internet). Now if your buget allows you could go wireless but that will cost considerably more than wired. Between 2-4 times more depending on where you get your stuff. Wired is better for security but wireless is a LOT more convienent in my opinion. A lot less cables to have to fight with. Hope that helps.

I have to agree with DragonSlayer's suggestion. You should network the PCs through a router. This will solve several other problems as well because it will allow you to share all of your periferals such as printers and scanners, and it will allow you to transfer and access files from PC to PC without having to use disks or thumb drives.

He's right, You can do a lot with usb's but you can't fix multiple ip address issues with anything but a router. Your cable provider bills you extra when giving you multiple addresses. The router keeps them thnking you only have one!
