Reviving Manufacturing in America

07/28/2009 4:25 PM

There is a great book out there called Manufacturing a Better Future for America that anyone who is interested in the revitalization of manufacturing must read. America needs to be reminded that manufacturing is what built our economy so many years ago, and that we should look to it once more to drag us out of the economic mess our country is facing. Furthermore, the economic mindset of our government and our business leaders needs to be shifted. The practice of offshoring production has rendered millions of Americans jobless and angry. This book justifies why jobs need to stay on American soil, and how a paradigm shift in business economics is needed to prevent this recession from repeating itself. All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to help bandage up our broken economy.

Does it explain to mommies and daddies that their kids can make great money as machinists or electricians and they can save money by not sending little Ronnie to liberal arts college?

America may need to read it, but parents have to vote with their kids future, and they ain;t buyin' manufacturing jobs for their little darlings.

HOW DO WE SELL MANUFACTURING WHEN COLLEGE IS de rigeur AND LAYOFFS ARE ALWAYS LOOMING?

Would you tell your child to forego college to become a machinist, electrician or tool maker?

You sound like an agent for the book, " Manufacturing a Better Future for America".

"The practice of offshoring production has rendered millions of Americans jobless and angry."

"The practice of offshoring production" has been around for the last 30 years. It won't go away.

Good luck.

Becasuse I worked for a company that was starting plants in Mexico and China 30 years ago. At the time the excuse was that they would only send excess work there that was beyond the capacity of US factories.

The us will never be a manufacturing powerhouse again. How many trillion $ did Bush/Chaney pump into Haliburton the Iraq war with no positive effect on the economy, except for a priviledged few.

One thing to keep in mind is if oil becomes > $200/barrel - items will be forced to be manufactured/moved back home because transportation costs would become exoberant.

The perception over here is that all our manufacturing jobs went to "all other countries."

While this is not true, it is indisputable that damn near all of the labor intensive low value work (ie commodity manufacturered goods) have left the US for China, and in Some cases vietnam. Etc etc.etc.

WHile those of us who are on here a lot recognize that you Brits make this a fun and informative forum, Probably most guests might think this to be a US -Centric forum.

And In my experience most US citizens are not terribly knowledgeable of things out side our continent. It might not occurr to them that you guys used to have a steel industry, for example. They just know that our mills are down.
