Test Pressure for HSD Underground Tank

07/30/2009 3:46 AM

What is the normal pressure inside a 10,000 Lt underground HSD tank. What is the test pressure. We know the test pressure is 1.5 times the design pressure. What is the normal value of pressure?

Regards,

Does it leak? If so, fix it. If not then leave it alone. Testing it may split it.

If is not a Pressure Vessel use the following values

  • 1 bar = 100 kPa (kilopascals) = 1,000,000 dynes per square centimeter (baryes) = 0.987 atm (atmospheres)
  • 1 dbar = 0.1 bar = 10 kPa = 100,000 dyn/cm2
  • 1 cbar = 0.01 bar = 1 kPa
  • 1 mbar = 0.001 bar = 0.1 kPa = 1 hPa (hectopascal) = 1,000 dyn/cm2

Example conversion: 1 atm pressure = 1.01325 bar = 1.01325 x 105 Pa = 1.01325 x 105 N/m2

It is an atmospheric tank - do not pressure test.

For atmospheric storage tanks, just fill it with water (or any available liquid) for few hours and detect any leaks. No way to apply any test pressure as you mentioned (1.5 times the design pressure) where this figure is only for hydrostatic test of piping systems designed as per ASME Code for Pressure Piping B31.

Note. The pressure vessels designed under the rules of ASME BPVC, Sec. VIII, Div. 1 are permitted to be hydrostatically tested at 1.3 times the design pressure (not 1.5).

Since it's an underground tank the detecting of any leaks would be the hard part. A low pressure, pressurization test could help detect if there is a leak but it would also indicate if there were leaks in the non-fluid filled vent lines, etc.

I thought all underground fuel storage tanks had a pressure rating for this purpose? Better check with the manufacturing specifications of the tank.
