Directional Over Current / Earth Fault

Can anybody explain what is the basic principle of directional over current and directional earth fault relay function. When we used such scheme in substation? plz give reply.

i have follwing date: trafo- 100 MVA, 220KV/33KV, Ynd1, Artificial neutral in delta side by earthing trafo. we are using broken delta PT and there are many PS class CT also in 33 KV panels.

Please read the following link . This is from the Book " Power system Commissioning and Practice by Keith Harker.This gives elaborate details of directional overcurrent and earth fault protection. Chapter 13
