Comparing Speaker Cables

08/15/2009 3:52 PM

Is Litz cable better than normal cable use in hifi speaker cable runs?

Or is it a scam?

Scam.

Mind you...
It is just about feasible...
that if you are a concert trained musician...
with a top of the range Hi Fi...
in a specially built room with concert standard acoustics...
and very very long speaker cables...
listening to specially selected music...
that you....
probably still couldn't hear any difference

"Is Litz cable better than normal cable use in hifi speaker cable runs?"

Only for the Litz cable manufacturers/distributors.

If you can pass an ABX test between $1000 Litz cables and a $4 AWG12 extension cord, I will eat my hat.

I am not so sure, maybe you can hear more, would you think that the rise and fall time would have effects on cable, OK low frequency maybe not but transient yes, and maybe even timing between a low note and the start of high note, there would be attenuation of the edge on thick bus bar type cable it could sound muddy!. I think the capacitance between the conductors would have a greater effect. And on the stability of the amplifier, oh what about the damping of the amp. Is that effected to??

More questions than answers,

I think you are suffering from 'Listener Fatigue'
A short blow to the back of the head with a wooden mallet will probably resolve all your audio queries.

I have never heard "Litz" wire as being used for HiFi applications. I have seen it and used it in wire form, but never as a cable. We used to wind RF coils with it back in the electronic experimentation days. I have "Monster" cable on my HiFi speakers and can't tell any difference between that and ordinary 18 ga zip cord. Monster cable costs $1.00 a foot, but I got about 40 feet of it for free from a friend. If you hook up a monster cable to a signal generator and oscilloscope, you may see a difference in the wave form, but not enough to make an audible difference.

This and other speaker wire scams and pseudoscience (including gold plated 120V outlets, cryogenic cable freezing, directional copper wires, etc) has been covered in previous threads on CR4.

I suspect that if you cannot tell the difference between audio codecs you use for the reproduction, then you can't tell what kind of cable you have.

Convoluted, but it prevents letting the discussion slide over to vinyl vs CD.
