What is IPSwitchPro?

08/16/2009 8:06 PM

... And how did it get on my system without me knowing? Why do I now get this message

sometimes when opening a file/folder (and always when invoking a shortcut within program folder to IPSwitch programs/features).

The only this changed recently was update of IE, download/install of XPProSP3, and (a couple days ago) install of System Mechanic Pro 9. Assuming IP refers to Internet Protocol, and Switch refers to switch, it would seem that the program (yes, the shortcuts were traced to the Programs sub folder but haven't yet found the executable file) has something to do with internet browsing...but the message generally appears when the system is not connected.

Can anyone suggest how to resolve the problem: make message stop appearing; reload the program to run properly; ...?

Note: the problem does not appear to be malware related:

When OK is invoked (see above pic), the program "excuses itself" and closes...from which "user" can proceed as normally.

IPSwitchPro is a programme for fast FTP upload/download of files, have you installed any FTP transfer programmes or anything that might use it?

Try contacting the software supplier IPSwitch to see if they can help.

Nigh is right, but it may be that WS_FTP (actually, a pretty good program. I used it for a long time as a sysadmin) was bundled with one of your other installs. If you select the automatic installation process (not using the one usually called "for advanced users", and for which use is usually discouraged) then any "bundled" software that IPSwitch, or the packager of your software thought you SHOULD want would be added also.

Usually, bundling like that is done as a means of getting someone else's S/W package into your hands. Also, usually, that package they want you to have, and have installed, is called "begware" a the least, meaning it will beg you to register it, which in turn will cost you money. Another approach to your money is to install "cripple ware" which, just like it sounds, is crippled, until you pay the company something. I have to confess though, that cripple ware is usually FUNCTIONALLY crippled, i.e., it works, but some parts don't. I've never seen cripple ware do what yours is doing, so I'd guess that a)it was bundled, but b)its installation was bungled.

As such, you can contact the company about it, but you can also, probably, de-install it. If you don't FTP files (and if you don't know what WS-ftp is, you probalby don't), you don't need an FTP client.

I'm guessing but I'm thinking that System Mechanic Pro 9 uses an embedded version of ws_ftp to update it's anti-virus database. Something went wrong on the SMP 9 install, possibly. Try uninstalling and re-installing?

I've been a ws_ftp pro user for years and love it. It's the next best thing to command line ftp.

I'm with you on how good it is, but next best still isn't as good. I'm an old-line UNIX admin, and I still like the command line better than ANY GUI! But I find myself spending ALL my time talking others through issues, and not getting to use it myself, so I had to go with LINUX and a GUI to keep my family happy.

And I think you're probably right about System Mech. That makes a lot of sense, though it would make more sense to use SFTP.

Yeah, having had my time in the Unix Admin barrel, I can relate. It just may be (a big maybe) that Win 7 will begin to have the ability to automate with scripts like we did with shell scripts. I'm not holding my breath though.

It's amazing how many companies embed other's ftp software into their stuff. Macromedia did that with Dreamweaver but made the mistake of writing their own embedded client. It never worked right.

I use System Mechanic Pro 9 at home but I don't think that it installed any FTP software.
