Gas Absorption Refrigerator

08/17/2009 9:55 AM

Hi all,

I have a gas absorption refrigerator which, every summer, gets smelly (burner, not food!) and inefficient. I clean out the chimney, blow out any cobwebs from the jet assembly, and it will work OK for a few days or weeks. Come autumn it works properly again until the next summer.

Are there any refrigeration specialists with experience of this type of refrigerator who can offer some advice to improve this problem? Do not suggest replacement with an electrical unit as we have an "off grid" house and our electric power is far more expensive than grid kWhs. I have got 230V adjacent to the fridge however.

Kind Regards

Chas

If the problem appear on summer . seem to be no exterior air on the condenser coil.

Keep away from wall the refrigerator.

There are several things to check. In summer, air circulation over the condenser is very critical. Also, the air circulation up the 'chimney' often gets hindered by insect webs as well as hot air in the rear of the unit hindering the air circulation. CLEANLINESS of the condensor, burner, chimney are ESSENTIAL to proper combustion.

I would go along with checking your vent. In the fall and winter the hot air rises faster while in the summer the lower difference in temp doesn't give as much impeteus to the exhaust gas to rise up the vent. It might even be that your vent is oversized if it was already existing and you tied into it. We had to scale down a flue when we converted from oil to gas heat and use double wall flue to prevent condensation which had rotted out the old flue. The condensation might account for the musty smell.

I pretty much have done as suggested, even, on this last attempt, cleaning all the condenser pipes and fins of any dust.

A devitg, no puedo moverlo. El tiene su sitio en la cocina y no pudo cambiarla. Todavía, el tiene aire libre arriba.

Yuri B. I tried to register but couldn't get on. I assume you meant "Refrigeration-engineer.com forums"

Keith & Spinco, I have done my best to keep it all clean back there. Would it help if I installed a small fan to improve the airflow behind the unit?

Because the problem always seemed associated with soot build up in the chimney I have changed the clearance of the restrictor plate by about a millimetre. This has stopped it stinking but it doesn't cool properly anymore. I have an ambient of 34ºC and an inside temp of 16ºC.This is a domestic refriderator.

The burner arrangement is as per diagram. I have modified the system slightly by trimming the edges of the restrictor plate by a fraction of a mm to allow a little more exhaust to pass and not get clogged so quickly with soot.
