Allowable stress in springs

How do I then find out what is the maximum allowable working stress? Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Dear AC: I admit, I have generally used handbooks, etc. Here is one link that doesn't answer your question very well, but does have some spring info: http://www.centuryspring.com/pdfs/techfaqs.pdf I cannot find a quick formula, but I know there are a lot of handbooks and programs out there - this one seems to be shareware with a free trial. http://www.download3000.com/download_8613.html Good luck and let me know if you find a way. Thanks for that JJC. I have since learnt that to find the allowable working stress for a spring you must first calculate the maximum stress in the spring using "8*mean diameter*force*Wahl correction factor/ pi*wire diameter cubed" this valvue should not be greater than a percentage of the minimum tensile strength of the material being used. The percentage varies dependant on the material and how it has been treated but it is usually around 40% the following website gives a table of valious spring materials and there properties which are quite useful. http://www.bristolspring.com/materials.html .Robmeldrum aka AC
