System Mechanic Pro Problem

08/19/2009 4:46 AM

I've used System Mechanic for some years. When you buy Pro you get 3 licenses so for some time I was using one of the licenses from a copy my son bought. As he now needs to use all 3, I bought my own copy this year.

Having un-installed the old version I installed the new downloaded version but it is somehow finding the license information for the old version instead of asking me for the new activation code. The makers, Iolo, sent me un-install instructions which included deleting programme folders & registry keys and I have followed this instruction several times without fixing the problem. They seem to be out of ideas & have stopped responding to my e-mails.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem?

Have you tried Revo Uninstaller? It find and allows you to delete all the files and registry keys left behind with the built-in uninstaller, and goes much deeper than windows add or remove utility. You can get this free program here.

Yes, I tried Revo. It found a few more registry items than Iolo had me remove but the problem is still there.

Go ahead let the program assign the old version then use this to get rid of it.

Then you may do a fresh install the version and activate.

Killbox is a secure delete programme which will remove all traces of a file but I think I would still have to tell it what files to remove.

I think that my problem is that the license information is in a file somewhere outside of the programme folder. I've already run programmes such as CCleaner, Tracks Eraser & HD Cleaner after running through Iolo's un-install sequence to remove all traces.

You would be correct.

I think I think what is troubling is file fragments left from the series of unsuccessful un-installs.

A component of Obit.com's Advanced system care 3 free version can remove file fragments and eliminate such interference.

I'll give that a try.

Another place you might check for remnant files is in the Application Data directory inside the Documents and Settings folder.

Look for the C:\Documents and Settings\[Your UserName Here]\Applications Data directory using the File Explorer. (Substitute your username in the spot where the square brackets are above, don't include the brackets with your username)

Check for a folder named Iolo or System Mechanic Pro in this area.

If you believe that you have fully uninstalled all of your System Mechanic Pro files, you can delete this directory and try reinstalling.

Sometimes, depending on how you uninstall, there are files left behind in this location with your settings data or license information.

Be aware that this is not a recommended thing to do on an installed program. It is sometimes good to reinstall or upgrade a program with your preferences already as they were before, but when you are trying to start from scratch these files being left is a pain for the user.

That's a good thought, I'll have a look in there.

Farmers Son, you are the king.

I checked in Application Data & found Iolo folders inside each of the users and administrators folders. I deleted these after I'd used Revo un-installer to remove the System Mechanic install. I then ran CCleaner, TracksEraser & HDcleaner to remove anything left in memory or in temp files.

After that the re-install went exactly as it should, prompting for the activation code near the start.

Thanks for everyones input.

ps. In Application Data I also found folders for programmes I deleted ages ago, this is the place to look if you have similar problems.

I was offered an upload (update) to my current version. Now all I get when I double click is and address violation or systemech.exe quit working. Why did I update it?

I have Vista
