08/19/2009 1:59 PM

I have a customer that is having some issues with a part that is running at 190 deg. cel.

and this part will be hit with cold water splashes on and off . the part must be held flat as it is a sealing bar . The size is 1-1/4" sq. x 14" long . my question is will titanium be the answer to there issues (( warping ))

Titanium Attributes

I'd compare coefficient of thermal expansion of my choices of possible candidate materials, and choose the one with the lowest CTE.

Where's Milo?

Milo is playing texas hold'em with the angels who fear to tread.

No mention of current material.

No description of current warpage pattern- end to end, just up at one end; camber or cantilever securement of the part. Twist? What is fluid being 'sealed? its pressure? Chemical nature?

No description (quantitative nor qualitative) of "some cold water splashes": volume, flow, duration.

No suggestion of the desired titanium alloy and its availability, Alpha, Alpha beta, or???

No photo or sketch?

Milo gonna sit this one out.

We don't bet when we can't see any cards...

If the size is 1-1/4" sq. x 14" long, the bar will be quite stiff. Unless corrosion resistance is needed why not a cheaper SS bar?

For working temperature at 190deg C, Titanium will be the ideal material to use.

Even though SS might be bit cheaper, at this temp. it will expand & contrast very easily causing other problems. If you are looking for long term solution, you can advise the end user to consider titanium.
