50-Hz Ballast in 60-Hz System

08/20/2009 6:18 AM

Dear Sir,

We are having fluorescent lamps with Electronic as well as Electromagnetic Ballasts, which are rated for 50 Hz operation, but our supply is 60 Hz and voltage is matching with rated voltage. Kindly let me know whether there is any effect on ballast or lamp due to this mismatch of frequency.

Have you asked the manufacturer?

Typically most ballasts will take the higher frequency with out any problems at all But the power factor or current limiting capacitor may need to be replaced with a smaller value. If so one about 5/6 of the original capacitance value is typically about right or at least close enough.

Many ballasts are 50 -60 Hz rated and require no changes. Without knowing for sure contacting the manufacturer is typicaly the smartest way to go.

A 60Hz 220volt rated FTL electromagnetic ballast will make lamp perform same as 50Hz 240 volt electromagnetic ballast with only diffrence being ballast losses(and vise versa)However PF improvement capacitor value shall be adjusted to take care of losses change and frequency change.

The problem that you will likely face is the same one for all electrical components dsigned for 50Hz operating on 60Hz. That is a shortened life expectancy.
