Using a Neutral Supported Cable Underground

08/20/2009 9:58 AM

Hi

Was NS (Neutral Supported) cable an acceptable choice for direct burial in the 1960's, when our lab was built in 1965.

We were asked to check on the possibility of a circuit being alive at an old sign wall/pump house far away from the main building.

I was told that this sign wall/pump house was not in use for quite some time before I started working here19 yrs ago.

I didn't measure any voltage at the rusting disconnect, and the whole place was basically in shambles.

It seemed to appear to me, that the wires in the 1 1/2" conduit were #2 NS cable as the two hots had thermoplastic insulation and the neutral was bare entering the conduit, where it then went 3' down into the pump pit, and then stubbed into the underground.

I tried our circuit tracer on it to try to find the routing of it, with no success.

So, I'm wondering if NS cable was used for that purpose back then, because all I have now are the latest Canadian Electrical codebooks, and can't find an answer.

Anyone?

Thanx - Loupy

Probably not. It is more likely that you have a cable with two insulated hot wires and a tinned copper bare neutral. The tinned copper neutral was often mistaken for an aluminum neutral, but bare aluminum that was placed in the ground in 1965 would have long ago corroded into nothingness

I think you are right Jim. A second closer look at the other SW/PH across the way had three #2 cables and all of them had insulation on them so probably the bare wire I was looking at the first time had the insulation deteriorate and fall off, and only appear similar to NS. Thanks, Loupy.
