Black Algae in my Pool

08/21/2009 1:18 PM

During the hottest two weeks of the year(110-117F) I entrusted the care of my pool to my neighbor while I was away. I came back to a pool that has black algae everywhere.

Is there something better than copper sulfate to treat these spots. A chlorine puck won't do it here, it's all over the bottom, too.

Or is there a commercial product that works better than this?

Thanks,

Lyn

not so smart, Thanks! I've tried the sock before on localized areas, and it does work. The problem is, I don't have enough socks to treat this pool, but I may use the sock trick if nothing else comes along.

Are they black? they could be fungus, try a fungicidae and then wipe 'em off with a pressure washer.

Hello lynlynch,

Does your pond have fish and plants in it? What you have to realise is this is completely natural. Not nice but natural!

Use a rake or grass rake to remove what you can. BTW, what size pond do you have? It may not do so but there is just a chance some fish may be in danger of the algae blocking their gills.

There is nothing 'wrong' with the water, that's the first thing to realise. The water has naturalised and is the best kind of water for any wind-life in the pond.

Cover the pond with black plastic, it is not important but best if it does not touch the water. After a week or so the algae will stop growing, as it grows and breeds because of direct sun shine. With no direct sun shine it will gradually die. You will find it most likely will sink to the bottom and if you have fish take care when removing and dumping this slime, so as not to hurt any fish or other animal life, snails baby fish caddis fly etc.

A little advice for the removed algae.................... Bury it! If left on the surface of the soil it attracts flies like a magnet! Try and get more out each day and replace the black plastic. Its is best if you can work on it late in the daylight so the sun is not too bright, just one way to stop any further algae growth.

It is not a nice job bot any algae on the pool side and plants should be removed also.

After a couple of weeks it should have died down a lot. While the weather is still bright sun shine keep the pond covered. It may work to just have half the pond covered. Hope this helps. I know what I am talking about my friend OK? Good luck. And let me know how you get on. There is no need at all to use any chemicals to reduce this growth OK?

Take care.

There's a product called "Shock It" that works pretty well. I've also used Chlorine pucks or liquid Chlorine. 5 or 6 pucks or a couple gallons of liquid. You won't be able to swim for a few days, but it works. I live in Arizona, and the Sun depletes the Chlorine pretty quickly. Good luck.

Drain the pool and clean it with sodium hypochloride or as strong of bleach as you can get. Spray it on using a spray bottle an use a mask as the fumes are bad. we use this to kill all fungus and black mold if we have a spill at our sewage treatment plant. This really works well. After spraying wait about 10 minutes and then rinse with water, if the first time it does not remove it let the bleach have more contact time and rinse again.

Thanks, That would do the trick, I'm sure. But first I'm gonna try some variation of the chlorine in the sock treatment.(Maybe a pillow case) Besides, it's 110 F here, and plaster doesn't like dry and hot. I should be out there now, instead of here..........................

Hello Tazman20,

Just a short reply to your advice on emptying the pool and using chlorine bleach, I believe it was?

This is definitely the way........... >>> NOT <<< ............. the way to proceed! If there is any pond life which is going to be returned. The pond will be DEAD! Chlorine will continue to leach out into any new water for a couple of years at the very least if applied to a concrete/cement render base.

I am assuming it is a fish pond of course. If it is just a small 'swimming pool' then the chlorine matters not.

Take care.

Hi babybear,

It's just a swimming pool, no fish. Just black dots on the floor and sides.

Hope you are well,

Lyn

I do believe on his blog it said pool not a pond. And even if it were a pond a good rinse and a little vinager will neutralize the chlorine, and make it safe for aquadic life. Even so at our treatment plant up in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada we hit the sewage if we have a major spill into the creek with bleach so it is not harmful to human life later. This is an approved practice through our enviromental depts.

Hi Guest,

I have not read anything of this on his blog. I just read the OP's first post on this thread. 'pool' and 'Pond' can often mean the same thing, especially if you are discussing a fish pool/pond in the first place. I now know this is not the case because 'lynlynch' the 'owner' of this thread posted me as you can see just a couple of posts up from this.

With regard to the sewage let out into the river, I can see short term effects which may not be welcome, but a good healthy water-course is able to deal with and neutralise the sewage in a few weeks or so................ As you say more or less, there is not always a choice other than to sluice it to the river or sea..

Take care.

hi my friend has holding tanks of water at there cabin and just dump a jug or two of bleach into it to keep it fresh. they shower and wash dish's. that will help to keep it away when you get rid of it.
