Legal Standards For Solar Tracking Structures

08/22/2009 9:21 AM

I have been contracted to design a 2-axis solar tracking frame for a small solar power-plant. The plant will be installed in Europe.

Where can I find the European Union technical standards and regulations which must be met by such a project?

There are many different suppliers of International Standards that operate commercially, a company like IHS for one example. However you may be able to obtain some ideas for which standards specifically apply by looking at the EU websites. Although there may not be standards specifically for 'Solar Tracking Structures' there will however be standards, or 'Directives' ( in Eurospeak ) relevant to construction materials, engineering design criteria ( needed to gain 'CE' marking ) even on how to fold Engineering Drawings. I wish you luck in your wander through the EU bureaucratic minefield, it is damned difficult enough for us here in Europe to navigate our way, but for people who are not familiar with the system..... well, that way lies madness..... but don't give up, it will be interesting, and challenging as well as frustrating in equal measure..... but the feeling of achievement when you finally surmount the final EU standards problems will be fantastic...... Just remember the old motto..... 'Nil Carborundum Illegitimi '.

Good luck with your quest.

Dear Wheatmag,

Many thanks for your advice. I checked on the European Commission website (http//eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu/). The complete codes are not freely available but there are summary presentations on pdf which are good for a start. I can already see that the most relevant to this task is the EN 1991-1-4 relating to wind loads. I checked some commercial websites, such as IHS and I can see it for sale which I will do when ready.

Thanks Again!

Thanks but I have already obtained the Euro requirements & specifications now.

As for raw material standards, this is not an issue as the design will be made according to the materials available at the manufacturing location.

Thanks anyway,

Dedalus

One more question.

I have been using CATIA v5 for the modeling as I am more familiar with it. I come from the Auto industry originally. However, the more I read about /civil engineering the more I see other applications being used. In fact, CATIA, which is bread-and-butter to auto engineers appears to be unknown to civil engineers.

Any recommendations about other software to use that will be more appropriate to this job?
