Buy "wash down" motors. They are designed to operate in wet places. You can "wash down" these motors with a water stream.

Not sure. I used them in PCB fab equipment. 1/2 to 3 HP.

Increase the ingress protection rating of the motor terminals' enclosures. If the seals are absent or damaged, improve them. If they are of too low a rating and cannot be improved, replace the motors with ones that have a higher rating.

In addition to making sure the motors you buy are properly specified, you might find the root cause of your problem has to do with worn/damaged cooling tower components. If your motors are actually getting wet, it's likely your eliminators are shot. Clogged nozzles, improper flow rate, damaged or misapplied fill are all possibilities too. check http://www.expertctr.com/ch_6.php

Good answer Don! Where are the motors located and how is the water reaching them?

There are several sub-systems on a cooling tower to keep the water inside the tower; leaking distribution piping, seal leaks, missing or malfunctioning drift eliminators, splashing in distribution basin, etc. If any of the sub-systems are in bad shape, the flow of water is poorly controlled and gets into the wrong places. Cooling tower performance is affected and water and energy is wasted.
