I had a problem like this with a Golf.

It was suggested that it may be the Lambda sensor, but I sold the car before I got round to changing it

Not intentionally, I had asked the op his location and another poster replied instead; who's on first?

It's a VW, what do you expect? I had a 2002 Golf which blew a piston after 60,000 km (not miles).

How about some sort of "cash for clunkers" program?

My first suggestion to you is to learn what the engine computer knows. Buy or rent a code reader. Record all of the codes stored in the memory of your car. Then clear all codes, and restart the car and watch for any new codes that appear. Those are what you need to start concerning yourself with. There are way too many parts on modern cars to guess what part to replace.

"I had the same problem with my car once. It turned out to be a bad wire on the condenser." Right now you don't think that my problem is the same problem that you have. You are right, you don't have a condenser that controls ignition. Don't copy someone else's repair procedure. Get your information, and fix YOUR car. Good luck. Let us know the codes you find, along with what started this problem, and I am sure we will be able to help you.

/since you replaced so many components already, let's look at the ignition switch.

If you have a considerate amount of keys or stuff hanging from your key chain, this will affect the electrical portion of the ignition switch and give you an intermittent issue.

Next time you are having issues, jiggle the key and see if you can duplicate the problem.
