At least Mssers Pete and Kris were polite enough to let you know their replies were "Off Topic" and not of much use except as a source of cheap humor to other nuts on this site.

When you ask for free advice, sometimes you get what you pay for!

"Collar" and "puddle" might be a colloquial term from a specific area or language. In my mind, collar sounds a bit straight forward, as in some type of band or encircling piece. Puddle is a bit more problematic, except that it is what develops under a leaking water pipe.

Do you have any other information, such as context or local usage of the terms?

(by the way, thanks for turning off the CAPS LOCK. your posts might be handled with a bit more seriousness on this forum!)

Much more polite than Id have been .

As I understand it, the 'puddle' is the flange-like element that surround the pipe in the picture linked by Lynlynch (half way along the pipe). Perhaps more correctly, pipe with such a feature is as a whole called puddle pipe. It enables the pipe to be fitted into a wall or similar. Collar is as you describe, usually to keep the pipe in position rather than form a joint (as a flange would). "Spudded" was just a bit of half-baked bit of wordplay.

I'm practisin' politeness for a Mr. Congeniality Award!

In my part of the US of A, I had never heard the term "puddle Flange". Today I have! I try to learn something every day. In our area, they are called "waterstops", and are not used for the pipe as they are for the sleeve that the pipe is passed through.

And "spuds" could either refer to potatos or short pipe taps depending on context. I like the red ones, boiled, with a bit of butter please!

If it was Miss I'd almost be asking for a date !

'Spudded-in' had me scratching my head back in the 80's when I first heard it. How on earth could they have found King Edwards in the North Sea I wondered ! Your quite right in the comments about stuff having different names in different areas. The list of Brit/American ones goes on forever, but there are plenty of phrases that are particular to just some regions within a country. The main thing is to know what the <whatever> does or is used for. 'Waterstop' is a better term, methinks.

Your definition of puddle flange sounds better than mine (which was a guess anyway !), but I couldn't resist 2 cents. The internet being what it is,a person needs to verify any information. The OP may have picked up enough to give him the courage to pick up a phone and simply ask somebody who makes the darn things. For some reason I suspect he wont come back and say "Yes, I've found out exactly what it is, verified from <link>, <link> and <link>. Sorry for shouting, I'll try and engage in a bit of amicable chat to quench my thirst for knowledge".

Here's an itty-bit more puddle chat.

I like the heard of Deere. First tractor I learned to operate was a 1959 730 hi-row crop model. That "putt-putt" engine never seemed to want to stop, it just kept lugging it's way up hills as he load increased!

Thanks for the education on the pupple flange! GA!
