what is Maraging steel? What is the machinability factor? what is the heattreatment cycle?

Hello,

Here is some info on Maraging Tool Steel.

Machinability is excellent.

It heat treats to 48RC on the Rockwell C Scale.

Heat treatment is carried out at 927 degrees C and followed by Aging.

AllVacs Vasco 250 and 300 are readily available but are very expensive. For blades and inserts in injection molds it can not be beaten. I have seen a slide insert for a electronic connector mold (using 23% glass filled Ultem), bent to almost 90 degrees and I straightened it out in a vice and but it back in the mold, to get the molder out of trouble. It remained in the mold for a year or two before being replaced. For more info go to www.matweb.com. Type in Maraging Steel and you will get an education.

Machining after heat treatment is similar to other heat treated toolsteels such as H-13 and (S-7 annealed to 56 RC). It polishes beautifully and is extremely stable in heat treatment. You must think of using it economically ie inserting it into other heat treated steel to utilize its properties without breaking the bank. It will drill, tap and ream easily.Surface grinding to extremely thin tooth like shapes is easily performed and tolerances of .0001" inches can be achieved with care, by wet and or dry grinding, using low pass depths on finish cuts.

It will wire edm and sinker EDM similar to the steels mentioned above. The recast layer in sinker EDM can be minimized by reducing your finish power setting to low amperage high frequency settings. It cuts more stainless or a high strength Aluminium 7075 than H-13 or S-7 as it transfers the heat rapidly.

Call and get a free sample of the material as I did the first time I used it. The company volunteered to heat treat it free also. It was the start of a long loyal consumer relationship with the company for me.

Hope this helps.
