When all else fails - litigate

U.S. Chamber of Commerce seeks trial on global warming

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-climate-trial25-2009aug25,0,901567.story

"It would be evolution versus creationism," said William Kovacs, the chamber's senior vice president for environment, technology and regulatory affairs. "It would be the science of climate change on trial."

They got about as much business meddling in that as a goose does meddling in nuclear physics. The Chamber of Commerce ought to pay a little more attention to retail sales and domestic manufacturing, neither of which is doing so well.

I would have to respectfully disagree that they have no business getting involved in this. Without getting into a discussion about the basis for the suit (lets leave that to other threads, please), if sweeping legislation is passed, it could have an affect on retail sales, and could have very serious implications for domestic manufacturing. As the representatives or ambassadors of the retail/manufacturing sector, the Chamber of Commerce should be looking after the interests of their members. Again, I don't want to argue the basis for their request, just stating I think it is within the scope of their "charter" if that's the proper term.

As a lobby they should certainly represent the interests of those who pay their bills. If they have science to present, then they should present it in the same forums as do all scientists.

This seems calculated to generate public opinion favorable to their cause, not honest scientific debate. The whole idea of a court ruling on science is antithetical to the very notion of honest research. It's very like the old days when royal societies would hand down decisions on which theories were "right" and which were "wrong" and dissent was not tolerated.

I supposed that if they were to win in court, the next step would be to outlaw the use of federal funds on research that challenged that result, since the matter had been "settled". What a great way to stifle your opposition.

These are proable the same people who rushed to build all those homes in the Sub Prime loan mess around Fort Meyers Fla. where there was little demand but selling to investors on the expections of millions of retirees moving to FLA.

One contractor said they needed to build all the homes they could and sell them before the water table rose anymore and the land was lost to the sea.

A scientist said it could take a few years for the water table to equalize around the world as the ice melts on the ice caps.

It is a completly settled subject no point in having a trial. Just ask Al Gore or Roger Pink....
