1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport Air Conditioning Problem

08/27/2009 12:08 PM

The gas leaked out over the winter and I had it recharged. It worked beautiful for about 3 days. Found that the evaporator had the leak. It was replaced (very expensive due to labor). Now the AC works but does not get as cold as it should even on MAX. position and low speed fan. Now, they say its the compressor. I don't think so because before they replaced the evaporator it would work well for a few days after a recharge. Any thoughts?

Sounds like they didn't evacuate the system well enough before filling with refrigerant, or not enough.

It could be a weak compressor, try hose on the evaporator and see if significant change of temperature occurs, if not return to the shop and have them adjust the refrigerant level to that which will produce the coolness desired.

Its a bit late for this tip, but don't forget it once you have it up and working again:-

Always switch on the air conditioning at least once a week during the winter for at least 30 minutes.

Always switch it on when its raining or simply wet, it stops condensation.

Switching it on keeps the seals wet and in a good condition.

My impression is that the company doing the repair are simply not good enough (local garage?), you may need a specialist AC company, it should be cheaper and quicker.....

Best wishes.....

I too, had a leak in the system and ran it when I did not know. It ended up hurting the compressor. So I had a big cost in that too.

you need to take your vehicle to a shop that understands AC & heat transfer and let them fix the problem that the other shop created. Tossing parts at problems only causes more problems, and in a case like this, expensive problems. Your problem could be caused by too much refrigerant, too little refrigerant, a blend door not properly adjusted or a host of other problems. A person that understands how heat transfer works can quickly, easily and accurately fix your problems.

Based on the initial suggestion that it wasn't properly evacuated (charsley99), I had them do that again (no cost). It now works so much better. All the answers/comments I got are great, I do run the AC occasionally in the winter, I should have gone to an AC shop not my usual mechanic, the evaporator did indeed have the leak, and in the Jeep the whole dashboard needs to come aprt to get to it, hence the big labor costs.

Thank you all

Be watchful for the system to change again. If the shop evacuated the system again, but did not find a leak that was there, it will fail again. Early signs that this is happening would be the sound of the A/C compressor cycling on and off. If this happens to you you still have a problem. I hope that you and your new evaporator have a long and happy life together. Just want you to be watchful.

Most times in the winter when you use the defroster you are running the AC. This is done to remove the moisture from the air stream in the defrost cycle. My jeep if put on cold for defrost has cold enough output to frost the windows in summer.

This change in operation was done by Chrysler to keep the seals "wet" and prevent rust build up on the shaft of the compressor.

So far, nothing has been mentioned about also changing the accumulator/dryer. Unless the dryer is known to be relatively new, it should be changed whenever major parts are changed. It filters moisture and sludge out of the refrigerant/oil mixture. Just pumping down the system cannot clean out the dryer sufficiently. True, before the system leaked, the moisture level was low enough for the AC to work well. After opening the system, a lot of moisture/humidity entered and was subsequently absorbed by the dryer, which should have been changed anyway. Apparently, after the repairs, pumping down did not remove enough moisture. Also, sometimes when the mechanic is pumping down and it is nearing the end of the day and he wants to charge the system before quitting time, he might not keep the pump on long enough to remove sufficient air and moisture from the system. The pump should be left on at least a half hour after it reaches its maximum vacuum ability, which varies due to the contamination level of the pump oil, and then shut off and left connected for 15-30 minutes to check for leaking and only then recharged. The quality of the mechanic is key.
