Private Pilot's License

08/30/2009 9:18 AM

Hi all, a question for aviation enthusiasts . Is it possible to receive a private pilot's certificate after being convicted of misdemeanor DUI, state of Fl, 5 years ago? Have acquired over 40 hrs, soloed, over period of MANY years. Was thinking about it recently, finances prevent it now, possibly in the future. Thanks

I don't know. I'd just call a local flight school and ask. My GUESS is that a DUI is not a factor.

You probably shouldn't have a problem with a single DUI. Be ready and willing to explain it and be honest. Consider getting legal advice.

The DUI should not of itself stop you, but make very sure that you report it on your medical form accurately and keep your copy. When you have your next physical make sure all the information is accurate and matches.

Don't tell them about the LSD, and all will be fine.

I believe that it is not a single occurrence that would disqualify you but a history of alcohol or drug abuse. Be sure to report it because when they find out about it, they will pull your license not for the DUI, but for falsifying the form.

A really good place to find out and to get answers from pilots is the AOPA forum, they are a helpful bunch.

thank all of you for your answers. I will delve into it with a local flight school, afraid to find out what it costs now, soloed in'75, think it was around 30.00 per hour,( c-150 with instructor).

Now it will cost $30 for the instructor and $85/hr wet for a C-152, $115/hr for a C-172 wet. Still worth it.
