Better Gas-to-Methanol Catalyst

08/31/2009 2:26 PM

We've been having various discussions about compressed natural gas around here lately. Converting methane to a liquid fuel is an attractive option.

Here is an excerpt from Technology Review & of course a link

A new catalyst for converting methane, the main component of natural gas, into a liquid fuel--methanol--has been developed by researchers in Germany. The catalyst could make direct conversion of methane to methanol cheaper than it is with existing catalysts, but it will likely fall short of a holy grail of hydrocarbon chemistry--a catalyst that allows natural gas to replace petroleum fuels on a large scale.

Makes sense to me.

Read the links.

Still as far as all the alternate fuels, and competition between batteries, and then fuel cells, not to mention the failures of the Grid, its like we can't or won't make any decisions one way or another and spin like tops and just fall over.

From what I have seen, it is not the lack of a catalyst that impedes wholesale acceptance of natural gas as a replacement for petroleum fuels on a large scale, but rather economics/vested interests. I have seen, here in Panama, that when gasoline goes above $4.00/gal, there is all of a sudden a lot of interest in converting automobiles to direct use of natural gas. The government even had a program to convert taxis that went well for a while, but, since gasoline is now less than $3.00/gal, the public has lost interest...

the real issue is that the catalysts cost and operation of the process still costs more than the other technologies.
