Material for Fuel Tank Rubber Gasket

09/01/2009 3:39 AM

The fuel inlet & outlet carrier plate at the top of the fuel tank has a rubber gasket 3mm thick sealing it. This gasket was supplied as "fuel resistant" but after less than 6 months and 2000kms the petrol has eaten the edge of the gasket and lumps have fallen off lodging in the fuel filter. What material should I use?

Hi Robbie, it shouldnt be happening if the existing gasket is a good quality NBR ( Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber) There are different grades and compounds depending if you are using alcohol based fuel or non alcohol modified fuel.

I don't what material was originally supplied, I only know that it wasn't up to the job! Our fuel doesn't have alcohol added, it is 93 octane lead free. A work pal has suggested Viton but I'm not familier with that material.

Hi

I work for a company making flexible fuel tanks. We use Viton as standard in our fuel tanks and it seems to stand up well over it's life. We receive these tanks back for retest after five years and the Viton shows no sign of degredation.

We have used Nitrile as well and never had a problem with it.

Neoprene is resistant to petrol and chemicals and comes in sheets so you can cut any shape you want, OK?

Neoprene is not fuel resistant. The material you require is nitrile rubber. A hand guide to the properties of gasket materials can be found here. http://www.ramgaskets.co.uk/uploads/Gasket_Material_Properties.pdf

Hello RamGas10,

ermmmm, if you own or represent the company you advise others to go to please note; the address as you typed it is not correct. Typed with lower-case letters it works fine, OK?

One other point, the OP (Original Post) was in February 2009, almost 2 years ago, so I would think two things; one: the OP has found what he or she wants from the many suggestions on this thread. And two: your answer is far too late for it to be of any help to the OP.

It may be of help to someone, but other's suggestions throughout the thread are more than adequate to explain what is suitable for this particular requirement.

Robbie RSA,

Inert to organic solvent materials could be your best choice. I would like to suggest, NYLON or POLYESTER based gaskets as your choice. You can also test it prior by intense contact conditions and decide yourself.

Yeah i would go with nitrile or neoprene. Natural rubber doesn't like some hydrocarbons I think.

Hello whezmabeer,

Hope you are well?

Yes this was my original suggestion, and of course, if things get desperate it can be used to patch my 'wet-suite'! ;=)

Take care.

Hello baby bear, yes i am well thank, hope you are too. I work in an area where hydrocarbons and animal fats are prevalent. You just cant use natural rubber.

Hello whesmabeer,

Yes, I realise natural rubber and hydrocarbons do not mix! Main from my own mistakes rebuilding engines.

Take care.

Thanks for all the information and advice. I have sourced some 3mm thick Viton ETP and installed it so I'm sure all will now be OK.

VITON, the 1st cousin to Teflon. Impervious to almost anything even at very high temperature range.! Good choice.!

I would recommend using Nitrile. Rubber gaskets made from Nitrile made work particularly well with fuels. A personal recommendation would be going for either Buna-N gaskets or NBR gaskets, which I got from a company called Martins Rubber.

Hope this helps!

Nitrile rubber sheet or HNBR sheet is the best,
