Fused Molded Case Circuit Breaker Application?

09/01/2009 8:20 AM

Dear Sirs,

Do you know what is the purpose/application of fuse molded case circuit breaker? Because I've seen this in industrial single line diagram, their motor and feeder is protected by two protection that is fuse molded case circuit breaker. Do you think it has something to do with short circuit?because short circuit is almost 60ka symm.

Thank you.

It used to be that it was difficult to get an interrupting capacity greater than 50kA in a circuit breaker, so some mfrs added fuses as current limiters. Even after MCCBs evolved to offer 65kAIC, they still offered fused suplements to get to 100kAIC. Now they have fuseless MCCBs at 100kAIC, so they offer the fused type for 200kAIC.

You are correct.

However, the fuse and CB had to be an approved assembly,

Westinghouse I believe offerred the fuses in a case that would attach to the breaker. But that was 35 years agp.
