stamford alternators

am trying to replace AS440 AVR with SX440 and do not have a wiring diagram, therefore am not sure of the connections

Be careful about that. Usually Stamford generators come with excitation support which requires supporting regualtors such as the MX-341, Stamford regulator. The wiring diagrams are easily accessed on Newage or Stamford sites. Some have three phase sensing while others, single phase. However, if the generator comes with an excitation support option, you will need a regulator that provides that.
