It depends on the type of welding you are doing. Visual inspection, mechanical inspection, x-ray inspection. We manufacture substation aluminium busbar joints and do all three.
I am sorry but your question signifies that you are not qualified to do the task.
To be brief,
The welding inspection starts even before the first arc strikes the metal.
- material check
- Checking for edge preparation
- cleanliness
etc
Then is the fit up test
- Alignment
- root gap
Then is the checking of worthiness and calibration of welding equipment
The electrodes - specified Vs actual, condition
Then is the Preheat of the component
After welding is completed (ie at your stage) there are four categories of inspection
- Physical - weld size measurements
- Visual
- Surface (LPI or MPI)
- Internal (UT/ Radiography)
However all this depends on the criticality of the weld and the code requirements. If you are seriosly into welding inspection, get qualified or get one certified welding inspector. Different agencies run the programs, may not be as detailed as AWS, but still..
