Electrical Design Software

09/07/2009 8:13 PM

Does anyone know about any electrical design software available & also, not expensive. This would be for calculations of short circuit current, analysis of fault, coordination studies and others?

I have a friend that has that. It's mostly for an electrican but does have some handy tables and is oriented toward N.E.C. Codes. I don't think that's what you're looking for. Skm uses the compreshensive short circuit analysis but does offer a more expensive version. I can also plot time/current curves for coordination studies. They have many other modules such as arc flash studies, transient motor starting studieds, etc. but It gets expensive!

I use SKM Power Tools Light. It cost me about $2000 bucks but it has paid for itself. It's pretty user friendly but like any other software, you have to learn some tricks. Their technical support is great except when you get an engineer on the phone that hasn't quite mastered the english language. But overall, they're great. Theres many programs available and one is Etap. I haven't tried it but it's popular. Included in my SKM program is the option to run studies useing IEC as well but most of my analysis are US. They provide a pretty good breaker library and when needing a special TCC, they will get it to you fast.

Both ETAP (www.etap.com) and SKM (www.skm.com) are great tools for the study. However, you can also try EasyPower (www.easypower.com). EasyPower is simpler to use and I think less expensive. I suggest you first try the free demo of these tools and then take the decision to buy. You can also try Aspen OneLiner (www.aspeninc.com).

ATP-EMTP. This is an open-source analysis package that is quite comprehensive, with extensive documentation and a very active user's group. Available for free download. Google ATP-EMTP for more information and availability.
