Mercury TV Tuner Card

09/11/2009 2:42 PM

Hi. I just bought a Mercury TV tuner card http://www.mercury-pc.com/product-detail.php?link=p-addcards&subtitle=Add-On%20Cards&productid=97 I installed the driver and program, and when I start the program, I cannot click off onto other windows and the video box 'encounters and error and needs to close' Does anyone know how to sort this? I have contacted customer support, but you know how bad it can be sometimes... I am on Xp pro, phenom 2.3GHz x4, 2 Gigs Ram. Cheers! Do you think it could be a corrupt prog? I have done virus scans on it.

Hi Bondy111,

If you haven't done so yet, go to their website and see if they have any updated drivers for it. This is fairly common as there is a delay between when they burn the disks and when you get it installed on your computer. In this time, bugs pop up and they write new or upgrade the drivers/software to fix them. Since it would be incredible messy to send everyone updated disks, the updated drivers are made available for download.

I downloaded it from their site. There is a download link on the product details for the driver, program and manual (but you cannot download the manual at the moment.)

When you downloaded the driver file where did you save it to? Sometimes they are zipped. I normally download them to the desktop because they're easy to find and unzip from there then you can go to device manager and update the driver from a location you know.

Hi Bondy,

Just a thought, but perhaps you and computers don't match?

wipe the software and reinstall it and see what happens.

Have you tried rebooting and or turning the computer right off and then back on and starting again?............. Did you reboot after you installed the software and or driver?

Good luck

I have just remembered about vid capture (or whatever it is called) - The Windows program. That seems to be working, but obviously doesn't have all the features.

The only problem now is that vidcap can only find the VCR when it is plugged in through S-Video, so there is no sound. There is also no option for the sound device. I am transferring home movies to dvd by the way (or atleast trying)

Hi Bondy, Just wondered,........................

How can you make a good recording with no sound? I am truly perplexed my friend.

You seem to working hard and cannot be put down by ANY problem, and that it all good to you!!!

Take care and, I would keep trying on whatever various set-ups you can, but do not record a whole lot of video with no sound cos' it will be a devil to get the sync?

The info I'm getting is:

download DScaler418.exe and save to desktop, disable the tuner driver in device manager then enable dscaler

or

return mercury and replace with more reputable device, mercury device software in general seems troublesome for many.

Ditch the chrome and get a decent browser like IE8 and you too can make smiley faces, you're all right Bondy and you ask good questions I'm certain many benefit from the discussions derived from your computer troubles, seriously

Yeah Bondy, is persistant

Isn't that what is required for computers I can usually get any application to work if I'm willing to spend enough time to figure it out.

I like IE8 but it doesn't play well with downloading templates for Open Office on my XP machine, It also seems to make my vista machine lock up more than normal...

I tryed Chrome, I don't understand why they left off the integration with bookmarks & the other google gadgets. My speed seems to have much more to do with my connection than, my browser.

Hi Garthh,

In answer to your statement come question, yes I guess it is those that are will to put the extra effort in that come to at least halfway understand computer.

I cannot understand it when someone who has never used one before, expects to be able to 'fly' straight from the off? It just is not like that if you want to truly understand what you are doing, right?

Of course, they could always just press the buttons and then try to tell 'muggins', (usually me) that they never "did that", when you know very well they must have done, if you see what I mean? Theres times when I know someone has been and fiddled with the machines settings trying to get by my safety settings, but, oh no, they never touch a damn thing.

For sure you need to be prepared to read endless instructions, and then are put down because "you 'playing' on your toys again"? Makes me wild.

Anyway, I have vented my spleen for tonight....................

Take care.

I haven't experienced those troubles on my XP or Vista machines using IE8. Some of my customers have had similar issues though after a visit it goes away.

Oh I like IE8, jumped right on board when it was 1st released. When I would try to download OO templates, 1/2 of the screens would be chopped off & unusable. The only solution I could find was switching to Firefox. The open source groups stick together. Firefox is faster than the last time I used it & the add ons are certainly better than IE. I put it on the vista machine & noticed a reduction in lock ups [crashes]. I also took your advice from another thread & turned off or removed any un-needed processes.

Vista still sucks, but at least it doesn't crash today.

The most annoying thing [& there are many] about vista, are the nag screens. Security is one thing, but damn...

Windows 7 is out soon, and it apparently will only cost £50! Cheapskate's paradise. I use Office 2007, and used to use OO, but it just wasn't compatible enough. Take care

Vista being at a comparable level within fifteen months what took four years for XP to gain the effectiveness. XP is in it's seventh year now but give Vista another year and it'll have the intuitiveness unavailable in XP.

I'll stay with Vista until at least June of 2011, the software vendors will not have caught up to Win7 until then anyway.

It took three installs of IE8 to get'er done right but I don't have patience for some of the other browsers and their inherent goofiness, though Maxthon is straight forward performance.

Oh I only Tried to install it twice on each.

The intuitiveness is what I hate about vista, a menu would be nice.

The security is overbearing [vista], it's set up for a multiple user scheme, with a defined administrator. We each have our own computer & no teenagers or such to worry about.

Is there a way to share without using the public folder? I do house keeping from time to time on my wife's vista machine, I would prefer to do it from here on my machine. We sometimes collaborate I end up having to move things into the public folder...

the damm thing is back to crashing, it doesn't seem to matter what program is running, though Hotmail seems to be bad. Partial restores aren't getting me there.

Had a look at maxon, seems ok.

I usually setup an administrator acct for security and integrity factors and do not go on line when the admin acct is open. I do not routinely require a password on the standard acct(s) which are used for general tasks and web etc., the UAC allows one to perform administrative functions from the standard acct.. You could setup to by-pass the logon screen at windows start but most leave their computers on most of the time so there's no point in it, unless you feel you need that type registry tweak.

Why do you not use remote access to service the other computer?

Crashing and blue screens etc. are indications of registry glitches.

I got your mail & I'll give it a shot when I'm on that machine...

I'm trying to follow along on this advice. so I'll recap as I understand.

set up a admin acct, only use it offline. no password I understand.

UAC?

I avoid playing with the registery, if I were I'd set a nice fresh restore point 1st.

I'll look at remote access.

I need to do simple things like keep the organization scheme intact, delete old versions of documents, pics, edit music.

My world has been upside down, since my external hard drive took a dump, this thing only has about 30gig, so it won't even hold all my music. When I was on a network with a xp desk top pc [300g] no problem. My unwife has that machine, so I'm trying to do similar things with the %#&^ vista machine [250g] but it all seems to be much more of a struggle, it just doesn't play well with others

A password protected admin acct even if you're behind a good hardware firewall.

UAC?

User Access Code = admin password

I avoid playing with the registry,

Great but some programs or updates can bugger it a bit unbeknown to you.

Checkout the local recycle you could find a few used hard drives for pennies.
