How to Make a Weld Bolt

09/12/2009 2:06 AM

I am working in a fasteners manufacturing plant. We want to produce a new product, a weld bolt. It is an unthreaded bolt made of st44-2 steel with a small aliminium ball embedded in its tip. The question is; how are we going to embedd this aliminium ball in a harder steel? Are there ready made machines doing such a process? what is the technical name of the process, so that I can search by using that name as a keyword.

Thanks

A hole is formed in the tip, ball inserted and the tip swagged to retain the ball. The depth of the hole is larger than the radius of the ball. How can it be a bolt without threads?

Nice one ronseto.

Swaged (swaging), crimped (crimping), flaring, staking, and spinning or whirling are all other possible methods, depending on design.

Hello MILO, @ Ron

Years ago when I was into reloading my own ammunition I had equipment the sized cast bullets by forcing it through a die. I also had a piece of equipment that forced lead wire into a pre sized mold that was shaped like a bullet. This was considered a swaged bullet. I considered this bullet to be inferior to the cast bullets as the softer material was lead fowling the gun barrel, the cast bullets were a blend of lead, tin, and antimony and thus a little harder.

As to the original post, I am not aware that a bolt needs threads, ie, bolts in guns, etc.. however the bolt represented by the poster apparently has a ball shaped cavity in the end and the softer aluminum could be forced into the end filling that space. However, I am totally unsure just why anyone would want to do this.

That bolt is used in the construction of the bridges. It is welded on a frame at the point of the aliminium ball. The aliminium fuses and makes a connection.

There are currently weld studs, bolts, and studs available to fill your application. Please check this link. http://www.nelsonstud.com/
