Look up azo-dyes in good chemistry textbooks. The -N=N- bond in these molecules is the feature that introduces the colour.

How to manufacture them comes from some chemistry experiments, and the hiring of an experienced and qualified Process Engineer. The documentation so produced is likely to be commercially sensitive.
