Are you sure the truck will roll freely forward and backward with the truck turned off? There could be a brake problem. ( not likely, but better than rebuilding the trans for nothing ) When you put the truck in neutral, with no brakes applied, does the truck try to move forward? If so there is an internal transmission problem. Do you have the check engine light on? I believe there are electronic solenoids in the transmission that could be the cause. If so they are easy to change. Is your transmission fluid dark? That is a bad sign. Good luck.

Most Chrysler models use some sort of electronic controlled AT, 4 or 5 solenoids that control hydraulic pressure to 4-5 clutches and to the lockup clutch of the torque converter. In reverse mode, your torque converter is unlocked, therefore, fluid is flowing where it normally does not flow, by this a solenoid and check balls allow this to happen. The lockup clutch locks out 1st gear when other gears are engaged, my THEORY is a clutch issue, 3&4 are not energized during R, but 1 and 2 are, hence low reverse....what if 3&4 became energized while in R, being a clutch and solenoid issue...if you have access to diagnostic tool, it should tell you your issue, all this is controlled by the PCM, too

GA.

The converter would have to be unlocked in both 1st and R, at least as long as the truck is not rolling.
