PVC Manufacturing Process

12/22/2006 12:42 AM

hello,

I would like to know about PVC manufacturing process. there are main two process of PVC manufacturing 1) ethenol process 2) calcium carbonate.

I would like to know about complete manufacturing process of PVC by calcium carbonate's roots.

And also if there any manufacturer from china/taiwan/india.

I am waiting for your valuable reply.

thanks.

Vinyl Chloride from Ethylene and from ACETYLENE is old hat.

Today Mega-Vinyl is synthesized direct from Ethane(most Natural gases have 1 to 5% ofC2H6)+Chlorine

Search the Net. You will find many more

PVC=POLYMERIZED VINYL CHLORIDE

Calcium Carbonate=CaCO3

Vinyl Chloride = CH2--CH2 -Cl(simply)

Not possible any way!

Calcium carbide + water forms acetylene.

acetylene + HCL results in vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), a known carcinogen.

You can make ethyne (formerly called acetylene) hence PVC from CaCO3. I don't all the practical details, but the principle is as follows.

Heat the CaCO3 in a limekiln to produce quicklime. CaCO3 = CaO + CO2 (this has been done for centuries if not millennia)

Mix the quicklime with carbon (powdered coke) and heat strongly. This produces calcium carbide. CaO + 3C = CaC2 + CO.

Add water to the calcium carbide to get ethyne. CaC2 + 2H2O = C2H2 + Ca(OH)2.

Then make VCM (see #4) and polymerise it (sounds easy!)

Once you get going, you only need (again in principle) a small input of CaCO3 for make-up, as the CaO can be recovered by heating the Ca(OH)2, and recycled. The only net inputs on the carbide part are carbon and water.
